Thresholds rise, quotas close, categories are added and withdrawn. Anything specific written here may be out of date by the time you read it, and a model asked about visa rules will answer confidently from a training cut-off that predates the current rules.\n\nEverything below is the **shape** of the routes so you know what to search for. The authoritative sources are free and official: gov.uk, uscis.gov, canada.ca, make-it-in-germany.de, ind.nl, immi.homeaffairs.gov.au and your destination's equivalent. Use those, and for anything complicated use a regulated adviser: in the UK an OISC-registered adviser or solicitor, in the US an immigration attorney, in Canada an RCIC.\n\n## The five routes\n\n**1. Employer-sponsored work visa.** The company must be licensed to sponsor and the role must meet a salary and skill threshold.\n\n- **United States, H-1B:** an annual cap with a lottery. Registration in March, selection by chance, employment starting in October. You cannot improve your odds and neither can your employer, which makes it the least plannable route in the world for something so consequential.\n- **United Kingdom, Skilled Worker:** requires a licensed sponsor and meeting the general salary floor and the occupation-specific going rate. The general threshold was raised substantially in 2024 and has continued to move: check the current figure, do not assume.\n- **Germany, EU Blue Card:** a recognised degree or equivalent experience and a salary above a threshold that is reset annually, with a lower threshold for shortage occupations including IT.\n- **Netherlands, highly skilled migrant:** a recognised sponsor and an age-banded salary threshold; administratively one of the simpler routes in Europe.\n\n**2. Points-based, no employer needed.** **Canada's Express Entry** scores age, education, language test results and experience, with category-based draws that have included STEM occupations. Australia runs a comparable skilled list. These reward preparation: a higher language test score is worth real points, and the test costs a few hundred dollars against a life change.\n\n**3. Intra-company transfer.** The most underrated route in this lesson. Join a multinational's office in your own country, do well for one to two years, and transfer internally. There is no lottery, the employer knows you, and the process is routine. A large share of the people you meet abroad arrived this way, and almost nobody plans for it deliberately.\n\n**4. Study, then work.** A master's degree followed by a post-study work permit: the UK Graduate Route, Canada's post-graduation work permit, Germany's eighteen-month job-seeking period, the Netherlands' orientation year. Expensive and slow, and it converts a visa problem into a debt problem: be clear-eyed about which of the two you would rather have.\n\n**5. Job-seeker and freelance permits.** Germany's Opportunity Card, and freelance or self-employment visas in several countries. Narrower, but real.\n\n## The costs nobody quotes\n\nAsk the employer, in writing, which of these they cover, because practice varies from everything to nothing:\n\n- Government application fees, per person, including dependants.\n- Health surcharges: the UK charges an annual immigration health surcharge per person for the full visa duration, payable up front, which for a family is a large four-figure sum before you land.\n- Legal fees, relocation, initial accommodation, and the deposit on a rental in a country where you have no credit history.\n- The flights, and the month of double rent.\n\n## The trade you are accepting\n\nA sponsored visa ties your right to remain to your employment. That changes the relationship: leaving is harder, negotiating is harder, and a redundancy becomes an immigration emergency with a short window to find a new sponsor. Some people find this entirely acceptable and it is a reasonable trade for what they gain. It is not a small one, and it should be a decision rather than a discovery.\n\n## One warning, because it costs people their savings\n\nNobody legitimate sells you a job offer. Paid \"consultants\" who guarantee employment abroad, ask for money to secure a work permit before any employer exists, or charge for a place on a \"sponsored programme\" are running the most common scam in this field, and the targets are exactly the people this course is written for. Employers pay recruiters; candidates do not pay for jobs. If money flows from you towards a job offer, stop."},"check":{"question":"A candidate in Lagos wants to work in Europe within three years and has an offer from the local office of a European multinational.
