All of them remove a barrier that is not the subject of the assessment.\n\n## Get it on the record\n\nIf you have a disability or a specific learning difference, register with your institution's disability service and get the adjustments documented. This matters for three reasons.\n\nIt makes the adjustment official rather than something you are quietly doing. It usually unlocks tools and support, often including paid software you would otherwise not have. And if any question is ever raised about your work, a documented adjustment is a complete answer rather than an explanation you are offering after the fact.\n\nThe process is often slow and involves paperwork. Start it early in the year, not in the week of a deadline.\n\n## The uneven distribution of risk\n\nThe rest of this lesson is uncomfortable and it is better said than not.\n\nThe costs of the current arrangements do not fall evenly. Detectors misclassify second-language writers at markedly higher rates, so students already working in a language not their own carry an additional risk their classmates do not. Students who were taught to write in a formulaic structure, which is what a great many school systems teach, particularly where exams reward a fixed essay shape, produce exactly the low-variation prose that detectors flag. Students without money use free tiers and free tools; students with money use better models and, in some cases, entirely undetectable arrangements. Students without a strong command of the institution's procedures are less likely to challenge an allegation and more likely to accept a finding.\n\nSo the current system is more likely to catch the least advantaged and less likely to catch the most. That is not an argument for using AI dishonestly. It is a reason to be sceptical of confident claims about fairness in this area, and a reason for the protective habits in this module to be treated as more urgent by exactly the students who have least reason to expect the benefit of the doubt.\n\n## What to do about your own position\n\nIf any of the categories above describes you:\n\n- Keep the process record, without exception. Version history on, always.\n- Disclose generously, including things you think are obviously fine.\n- Register any adjustment formally.\n- Know where your students' union advice service is before you need it.\n- Keep samples of your writing from across the year, so a change in register has an innocent explanation with evidence attached.\n\nNone of that is fair as a distribution of effort. It is what reduces the risk under the arrangements that exist.\n\n## And the argument worth making\n\nInstitutions are actively revising these policies, and student input has changed several of them. If your institution uses detector scores as sole evidence, that is contrary to what the vendors themselves say, and it is a reasonable thing for a students' union to raise. If your course prohibits tools that its own disability service provides, that inconsistency is worth naming.\n\nThe rules are being written now, in a hurry, by people who are also working it out. Being the student who reads the policy and asks a precise question about it is a more useful contribution than it sounds.\n\n## The thing that does not change\n\nAn adjustment removes a barrier to demonstrating what you know. It does not supply what you know. A dyslexic student using text-to-speech still has to have read and understood the material; a dictating student still has to have the argument. If a use is supplying the substance rather than the access, it is not an adjustment, whatever it is called, and that distinction is one you can apply honestly to your own case better than anybody else can."},"check":{"question":"What distinguishes a legitimate accessibility adjustment from a use that crosses into misconduct?","options":[{"text":"Whether the student has a formally registered disability, since registration is what makes the same tool permitted.","correct":false,"tempting":"Registration matters evidentially and does not determine the substance; a registered student can still cross the line, and an unregistered one can use a tool legitimately."},{"text":"Whether the tool was provided by the institution, since institutionally supplied software is by definition permitted.","correct":false,"tempting":"Provenance of the software does not settle how it is used; a permitted tool can be used to generate a submission."},{"text":"Whether the assessment criteria include the skill the tool replaces, since an adjustment is only legitimate where the barrier is incidental to what is being marked.","correct":false,"tempting":"Close to right and phrased as though criteria settle it; the substance test applies even where criteria are vague or unwritten."},{"text":"Whether it removes a barrier to demonstrating knowledge, or supplies the knowledge itself.","correct":true}]},"prev":{"slug":"where-the-line-really-is","title":"Where the line really is","url":"https://addaly.com/learn/ai-for-students/where-the-line-really-is"},"next":{"slug":"what-happens-to-what-you-type","title":"What happens to what you type","url":"https://addaly.com/learn/ai-for-students/what-happens-to-what-you-type"},"authorship":"Founder and series editor: Dr Mustafa Mun.
