A generated statement is recognisable not because of any detector, but because it says the same things: passion for the subject from a young age, a formative moment described in general terms, transferable skills, a closing sentence about contributing to the community.\n\nEvery one of those is the average of what has been written, which is precisely what a next-token predictor produces. The average is exactly what does not distinguish you, in a document whose only purpose is to distinguish you.\n\nAnd increasingly it is checked. Several admissions systems and employers now ask questions at interview that only somebody who wrote the statement can answer, and some application processes have moved to short live tasks for this reason.\n\n## What actually works\n\nSpecificity, and it is the whole answer.\n\nNot *I am fascinated by biology* but *I spent a summer counting bees in my grandmother's garden and found that the count changed with the time of day more than with the weather, which is when I started reading about foraging behaviour.*\n\nThe second is memorable, unfakeable, and true. It also tells the reader far more: that you notice things, follow them up, and read beyond the syllabus. None of that had to be asserted.\n\nThe test for any sentence in a personal statement: **could another applicant have written this?** If yes, cut it. What survives is short, and it is yours.\n\n## The legitimate uses\n\nThere are real ones, and they are all at the edges:\n\n- **Interrogation.** *Ask me fifteen questions about my experience that would surface specific stories.* Excellent. Most people cannot remember their own material on demand, and questions unlock it.\n- **Structural feedback on your draft.** Which paragraph is vague, where you asserted instead of showing.\n- **Checking against the criteria**, where an application publishes them.\n- **Grammar and spelling.** Ordinary.\n- **Interview preparation**: generating likely questions and practising aloud. Very good, and the same technique as the viva lesson.\n\n## The rules, which are real\n\nSome application systems now explicitly prohibit AI-generated statements and require a declaration. UCAS in the UK, for example, expects the statement to be the applicant's own work and screens for similarity; universities and employers have their own positions. Fabricating experience is fraud, and it has consequences beyond a rejection: offers are withdrawn and, where a qualification results, revoked.\n\nRead what the application says and follow it. If it asks whether you used AI, answer honestly; a truthful yes about grammar checking has never cost anybody a place.\n\n## CVs and cover letters\n\nA slightly different case. These are formulaic documents, the form is standardised, and using a tool to structure them is normal practice: many employers use automated screening at the other end of the same pipe.\n\nWhat still has to be yours: every claim of fact, every number, and every example. A generated cover letter that describes achievements you did not have is a lie you will be asked about in an interview, by somebody holding it.\n\nThe good use is the reverse of generation: paste the job description and your real experience, and ask which of your experiences match which requirements, and what you have not evidenced. Analysis of supplied material, and it is useful, because most people are bad at seeing which of their own experiences are relevant.\n\n## Interviews\n\nThe part no tool sits in, and where everything above gets tested.\n\n- Practise out loud, against generated questions. The same technique that works for a viva.\n- Have three or four specific stories ready that you can adapt to different questions. Real ones, with details you remember because they happened.\n- Prepare to be asked about anything on your application, including the thing you mentioned in passing.\n- Have a question of your own that shows you looked into them properly.\n\nAnd the connection back to this whole course: an interview is an unaided check. Everything you can actually do is available to you there, and everything you cannot is not. Which is why the habits in Module 3 turn out to matter for reasons well beyond exams."},"check":{"question":"Why does a generated personal statement fail even when it is well written and contains no errors?","options":[{"text":"Because admissions systems screen statements for AI generation and reject flagged applications.","correct":false,"tempting":"Relies on detection, which is unreliable and is not why the document fails to work."},{"text":"Because the register is too polished for an applicant of that age, and the mismatch between the statement and the rest of the application raises doubt.","correct":false,"tempting":"Assumes a reader is comparing registers forensically; the statement would fail on a first reading purely for being interchangeable."},{"text":"Because it cannot include specific personal experiences, which are what admissions tutors are looking for.","correct":false,"tempting":"Not strictly true (a model will happily include experiences you supply) and it locates the fault in capability rather than in what generation optimises for."},{"text":"Because it produces the average of what has been written, in a document whose only purpose is to distinguish you.","correct":true}]},"prev":{"slug":"long-projects","title":"Long projects and dissertations","url":"https://addaly.com/learn/ai-for-students/long-projects"},"next":{"slug":"placements-and-professional-practice","title":"Placements, and rules that are not your university's","url":"https://addaly.com/learn/ai-for-students/placements-and-professional-practice"},"authorship":"Founder and series editor: Dr Mustafa Mun.
