You can rewrite every sentence and the essay remains an essay you did not write, because the essay is the argument, not the sentences.\n\n**If you draft and the model attacks, you keep the argument** and get something most students never have: a reader who responds immediately, at two in the morning, and is not tired of you.\n\nSame tool. Same finished polish. Completely different piece of work.\n\n## A working sequence\n\n**1. Think out loud: talk to it.** This stage is fine and useful. But make it the one asking:\n\n```text\nI'm writing about why Bolivia's water privatisation in\nCochabamba collapsed. Don't tell me your view. Ask me\nquestions until I've said something specific enough to\nargue.\n```\n\n**2. Outline: yours, always.** One sentence per paragraph, and the sentences must be claims, not topics. \"Colonial land registration\" is a topic. \"Colonial land registration created the ownership ambiguity that the 1998 reform then failed to resolve\" is a claim. Ten claim-sentences in order *is* your essay, and it is the part that carries the mark.\n\n**3. Draft: yours, and badly.** Fast, ugly, out of order. The bad draft is not a lesser version of the good one; it is the mechanism by which you discover that your third point actually undercuts your second. That discovery cannot happen to a reader.\n\n**4. Critique: theirs, and hard.** Now the tool earns its place:\n\n```text\nWhat is my actual thesis, in one sentence, based only on\nwhat I wrote? Not what I seem to have intended.\n```\n\n```text\nWhich paragraph would a hostile examiner attack first, and\nwhat would they say?\n```\n\n```text\nList every claim I make that I haven't evidenced.\nDon't fix them.\n```\n\n```text\nWhere does the essay stop supporting the thesis and start\njust being about the topic?\n```\n\nThat first prompt is the most useful in this course. The gap between the thesis you meant and the thesis you wrote is where most marks are lost, and you cannot see it yourself because you can see your intention.\n\n**5. Line edit: mixed, carefully.** Fine to get grammar and clarity help. Watch for flattening: models smooth prose toward a comfortable average, and the average is dull.\n\n**6. Read it aloud.** Yourself. Any sentence you would not say is a sentence you did not write.\n\n## What machine prose sounds like\n\nLearn the tells, so you notice when your own writing drifts toward them.\n\nGroups of three. \"Not only X, but Y.\" Words like *delve*, *tapestry*, *multifaceted*, *underscore*. \"It is important to note that.\" Paragraphs that end by summarising themselves. Hedging in both directions so nothing is claimed. Sentences of uniform medium length, one after another, forever.\n\nYour voice lives mostly in three places: **rhythm** (short sentence after a long one), **specificity** (the actual number, the actual example: a shopkeeper in Kano, ₦40,000, a Tuesday), and **willingness to say a thing flatly** without softening it into safety.\n\nA model asked to preserve your voice will preserve your vocabulary and quietly regularise the rhythm. Rhythm is where it goes.\n\n## If English is not your first language\n\nThis is where the tool is most valuable and the advice is most often useless. You are not trying to keep a stylistic flourish. You are trying to be judged on your argument rather than your prepositions. That is fair, and refusing help is not noble.\n\nThe distinction that matters: **ask for corrections with reasons, not rewrites.**\n\n```text\nCorrect only grammar and word choice. Keep my sentence\nstructure. List each change and why, so I learn it.\n```\n\nThe list is the point. It is a personal error catalogue, and after a term of it, the same corrections stop appearing. A rewrite gives you a cleaner essay this week and nothing at all next week.\n\nAnd there is a second reason to insist on your own structure. Detection systems (the subject of the next lesson) flag simple, regular, low-variance prose as machine-written, and they flag non-native writers far more often than native ones. Sounding more like yourself is, awkwardly, also the safer position."},"check":{"question":"Two essays arrive with equal polish. Amara wrote her draft and asked for a critique.
