It has thousands of shares. You paste it, and the result is fine, not obviously better than the two-line version you would have written.\n\nThree reasons, and none of them is that the author was lying.\n\n**It was tuned to their task.** The specifics they removed to make it general were the specifics doing the work. A prompt for reviewing *their* contracts, with *their* concerns, generalised into \"review contracts\", is now a prompt about a category.\n\n**It was tuned to a different model and moment.** Most viral prompt templates date from 2023 or 2024. Their scaffolding (role-play, elaborate step instructions, motivational framing) compensates for weaknesses current models mostly do not have.\n\n**It has never been tested.** Templates spread because they read impressively. Reading impressively and producing good output are unrelated properties, and almost nobody who shares one has run it against a fixed set of items with and without.\n\n## What is actually worth borrowing\n\nNot the wording. The **structure**, and specifically anything that reveals a distinction you had not made.\n\nIf a borrowed prompt asks for the output in three sections you had not thought of (say, a separate section for \"what would change this recommendation\") that is a genuine idea, and it is worth ten times the paragraph of persona it arrived wrapped in.\n\nSo read borrowed prompts for their skeleton, extract the one or two ideas that are new to you, and throw the rest away.\n\n## How to strip one down\n\n1. **Delete the persona paragraph.** Almost always decoration.\n2. **Delete anything motivational**: importance, stakes, tips, effort exhortations.\n3. **Delete instructions to be thorough, careful, accurate or detailed.** They are wishes.\n4. **Keep the output structure.** This is usually the valuable part.\n5. **Keep any constraint that names something specific**, especially a fallback for missing data.\n6. **Add your material and your context**, which the template necessarily lacks.\n\nA 500-word template usually reduces to 80 words plus your context, and performs at least as well. Test both if you doubt it: that is exactly what your test items are for, and it is a satisfying twenty minutes.\n\n## The specific case of \"prompt packs\"\n\nBundles sold as products, hundreds of prompts for a price. What you are buying is a list of tasks somebody thought of, phrased as prompts. Occasionally the list has value: seeing that a task is possible is useful, and a list of two hundred use cases can prompt ideas.\n\nThe prompts themselves are the least valuable part, and the reason is structural rather than cynical. A prompt's value lives in its specificity to your work, and anything sold to thousands of people has had that removed by definition.\n\n## Where borrowed material helps\n\n**Domain checklists.** A list of clauses a commercial lawyer checks is expertise you do not have. That is worth pasting, and it is not really a prompt: it is knowledge in a prompt-shaped container.\n\n**Format conventions.** Somebody's carefully worked-out structure for an incident report or a grant application. Reusable, because the shape is the point.\n\n**Ideas about decomposition.** Seeing that somebody split a job into four steps where you were doing it in one.\n\nEach of those is content, and content transfers. Phrasing does not, and phrasing is what most templates consist of.\n\n## The summary\n\nPrompting is not a set of spells somebody else can hand you. It is the ability to describe your own work precisely, which is why a stranger's prompt cannot do it for you and why the file you build yourself keeps getting more valuable while the templates you collect do not.\n\n## One fair test you can run\n\nIf you want to settle this rather than take it on trust, take a viral template for a task you do, and write your own eighty-word version with your material in it. Run both over the same ten items, three runs each.\n\nAlmost everyone who does this is surprised by how well the short version does, and the surprise is the point: it is the moment the collecting habit stops and the writing habit starts. The templates are not fraudulent. They are somebody else's specificity, removed."},"check":{"question":"A manager finds a 600-word \"expert consultant\" prompt for competitor analysis.
