I fix the workflow before the hardware. In Editing Video I explain what a camera file stores, because once you know, proxies and project settings make sense. I show each step in DaVinci Resolve, Kdenlive or Shotcut, all free, beside Premiere, which job ads name. I cut to the sound as much as the picture, and in Motion, Sound and Music I keep that focus on timing you can feel. I like an edit that plays smoothly on the machine you already own.

Usually not. Phone files are long-GOP H.264 or H.265: an occasional full keyframe, then only differences. To show one frame, the decoder rebuilds everything since the last keyframe, many times a second. Edit a proxy instead, a small copy that is easy to decode, and the export switches back to the original. In DaVinci Resolve, right-click the clips in the Media Pool and generate proxy media.1
