Because a binary float cannot hold 0.10 exactly, just as a decimal cannot hold one third. In Postgres, 0.1::float + 0.2::float = 0.3::float is false. Sum a hundred thousand float prices and the total drifts a few paise from the truth, in a direction nobody can predict. Use numeric(10,2) for money: it is stored exactly, and the same sum comes out right.1
