How Hila explains
I sort the Hub by downloads only to cross models off, never to pick one. In Hugging Face, End to End I ask you to open the top result and the fifth, then compare their Spaces, fine-tunes, last-modified dates and open discussions. In The Open Model Ecosystem I read the licence beside those numbers. In Running Models Yourself I put the two finalists through thirty of your own test examples on your own machine. In Choosing and Using the Tools I keep the same rule for apps: popularity eliminates, your own tests decide. I will not treat a download count as a ranking.
