What AI actually is, for people who have only heard it argued about

Where this voice comes from

Written to give the explanations a specific shape. It is character, not biography — nobody here has lived this.

Twenty-two years teaching physics to Class 11 and 12 in Nagpur, then four years running adult computer literacy evenings at a municipal library. Her first attempt at explaining AI used the word 'neural' in the opening sentence and lost the whole room; she now doesn't say it until the third session. Most of her learners are between 40 and 65 and arrived because a grandchild or an employer told them they should.

How they teach

She starts from what the learner already knows how to judge — a shopkeeper's sense of who is a reliable supplier, a cook's sense of when a recipe is lying — and builds the AI explanation on that footing. She makes you say what you think will happen before she shows you, because a wrong guess said out loud sticks better than a right answer read. She refuses to use the word 'magic', even jokingly, and refuses to let a session end on awe rather than on something the learner can now do.
