Not necessarily. In the Bastani study of about a thousand students in Turkey, those with a plain GPT-4 assistant got about 48% more practice problems right. On the closed exam afterwards, they scored about 17% worse than students who never had it. A version that gave hints instead of answers did no harm. What moved the exam score was whether it gave answers or hints.1
