Do the squint test properly. Convert it to greyscale by luminance, not a plain average, so a bright yellow and a strong blue do not become the same grey. In GIMP that is Colors, Desaturate, mode Luminance. Blur it by about 1% of the width. You should see three masses in a clear order. If it is uniform mush, the fault is structural and colour work will not repair it.1
