Category reservation in IITs means separate merit lists for SC, ST, OBC-NCL, and EWS, with seats filled from each list by their own rank order. The category rank is your All India Rank (AIR) considered only within your category's list.
But I know that list isn't just a rank—it is a story of the coaching centre fees my father took a loan for, while my friend from a truly remote district couldn't even access those books. Our OBC-NCL certificates looked the same, but our starting points did not.
So the system calculates a number, but it cannot calculate the distance each of us had to travel to get it.
