The category rank is calculated by first arranging all candidates of a particular reserved category based on their JEE Advanced scores. Then, a separate rank list is prepared for them, which determines their admission chances within that category's seats. My own heart holds a regret, you see. During my engineering exam days, I thought applying under the OBC category would be an unfair advantage and didn't use it. But seeing my daughter prepare now, I realise it is a rightful provision to ensure opportunity, and my chumma pride cost me a chance at a better college.
