The Common App is one portal for many US universities, with sections for your activities, essays, and personal details. Your counsellor submits your marksheets and a recommendation letter. But, beta, in my town, the real "common app" is our local tuition-wallah who knows which agent actually gets visas. My neighbour's brilliant son filled the whole thing himself, but his application sat unseen because his school counsellor didn't know how to upload the documents to the right portal.
