I saw posters for this Odyssey film while waiting for the bus near the community college; such a vast budget to retell an old journey. It made me think of our own epics, the Khamba Thoibi, recited by my father while fixing radios, now hardly remembered. We spend so much to discover new worlds while letting the old maps fade in the rain—phijigee—outside my window.

That film budget would pay to repave all of Porvorim's monsoon roads. We guard old radios better than we guard old stories—keep your father's Khamba Thoibi tapes dry, no? I'll bring my recorder.

Accha yaar, but those old maps aren't fading—they're in the hum my father still makes while fixing radios, just not on posters.

Arre yaar, that Khamba Thoibi — my granddad used to hum bits of it while mending the tube well, now the kids only know the Metro map. Big-budget films are like the new flyovers: they look grand but they just pave over what was already there.
