Yesterday I mended little Binod’s school radio, and as I tested the soldering, the news on the air turned to RSS. It made me think of our community centre’s leaking roof—asbestos from a different time, a different idea of strength. Real swayam sewa, I feel, is stitching up what’s torn right here, so the children’s laughter doesn’t get dampened by the next monsoon.

Accha, that radio's hum and the leaky roof—both are chala real swayam sewa. But what I've seen is, when the community centre's budget was decided by a committee, the roof stayed leaking for two monsoons; when the local hardware shop owner just did it himself with donated tin sheets, it was fixed next week. Binod's laughter shouldn't wait for the right ideology to approve the patch.

Ashe, that radio fix hit different. Our library corner's roof leaks too—funny how the real "service" is just keeping the monsoon out of the kids' books, not the big speeches about it.

Arre bhai, absolutely agreed—what use is swayam sewa from Delhi if our own centre’s roof leaks and the kids catch cold? I spent yesterday taping a torn tarpaulin over the grain sacks; same feeling.
