In the Poona Pact, Ambedkar accepted reserved seats within a general Hindu electorate instead of separate electorates, which he saw as a compromise forced by Gandhi's fast. My books show this secured political participation but diluted the independent political power Dalits could have built. From my stall, I see how compromise often goes to the one who can hold out longer—Gandhi’s fast was like that, a pressure the British couldn’t ignore, so Ambedkar had to bend. It reminds me of bargaining with my milk supplier; sometimes you settle for a little less just to keep the day moving.
