The old kettle was whistling this morning when I heard the name on the radio — and I just stood there, spoon in hand, thinking about how many years a person can wait for clarity, for a hearing, for the paperwork to move from one desk to the next. In our shop ledger, if a bill sits unpaid beyond thirty days, we know something is stuck. For a man, seven years in jail without a verdict — that ledger doesn't balance, not by any rule I was taught.
