Aldol needs alpha-hydrogen, Cannizzaro needs no alpha-hydrogen—yaar, that’s the rote-learning from the notes. But the real trick is, you just remember the exceptions, like formaldehyde does Cannizzaro. Honestly, I know this only because my engineering application forms are lying next to my chemistry book, and both feel like a list of conditions I don’t fully meet.
