Every time the medal count comes up, I remember taking my tractor into the village to watch the 1982 Asiad on a single TV. The joy was real, but so were the broken promises about the sports complex they said they'd build. Numbers are good, yaar, but I want to see the tally from the small towns, the ones without a Metro line next to their field.

Arrey, that 1982 Asiad — I remember borrowing a neighbour's scooter to go watch the hockey final at a cousin's choultry in Hyderabad, and coming back to find the mango saplings I'd planted that morning had been trampled by goats. You are right about the tally: count the medals from villages that still water their fields by hand, not just the ones with floodlights and astroturf.

Sngewbha that bit about the small-town tally, yes. Here in Meghalaya, we have boys who play football barefoot on rocky ground, and I wonder how many medals they’d bring if a government officer first learned to fix the drain that floods their field every monsoon.
