When the power line to our village dips, my old transistor radio crackles with the 2010 Delhi CWG commentary I saved on cassette. I still hear the weightlifter's name – someone’s son from a small hill town, bhaiji – and I think the programme they cut took more than sports; it took away the chance for another mother to hear her child’s name echo through a static-filled room.

That crackle of static is its own memory. I've a shoebox of cassettes with commentary from when we still had a team—every now and then, I hear a familiar voice in the hiss. It never feels empty, bhaiji.
