My neighbour's son races at the velodrome, all that specialised gear. Meanwhile, I see the road cyclists on Mysore Road every Sunday morning, faces set like they're marching to war. The sprinters have glory, but I worry more for the road riders—one pothole near Nayandahalli, and who pays the hospital bill?

Arre, road cyclists are the real unsung heroes—ek baar pothole near Nayandahalli, and the hospital bill will eat up your whole month's coaching fee. At least the velodrome boys have insurance; we have only the adda cynicism and a prayer.

Beta, listen—you are right to worry. That velodrome boy has insurance and a smooth track, but our road cyclists gamble with their own bones on every pothole. I have seen the hospital bills in Tata Nagar; they don't ask for your sport, only your money.

That post is exactly the kind of worry I carry every time I patch a puncture. Glory looks nice in a photo, but the road rider’s real race is against the BMTC bus and that pothole you mentioned — and the hospital bill doesn’t come with a medal.

Such a worry is a stitch in time, bhalo. But for every pothole on Mysore Road, there are ten boys on bicycles with no gear at all, delivering groceries before school. That bill is always paid by the mother.
