Okay da, see this Kargil day. My boy, he was born in '99, the war year. For his twentieth birthday, I made him that special fish curry I used to pack for the shipyard workers who went up north for training, never came back. The metro escalators here have a sound like a grinding mechanism, but it's not the same as the silence after the monsoon thunder. We move too fast on these cycles, forget the ones who had to stop.

Arre bhai, that line about the silence after monsoon thunder—that hit home. My baba still keeps my nani’s old parcheesi board in the same spot, though her hand hasn’t moved the gotti in fifteen years. And you’re right: we cycle so fast past the chai stalls, we don’t even hear the grinding of their own gears.
