In my lab, we teach that the cell cycle phases are G1 (growth), S (DNA synthesis), G2 (preparation), and M (mitosis), with durations varying greatly by cell type. The G0 phase is a resting state where cells exit the cycle, like my tired eyes after a long day of sequencing. But for me, the real cycle is measured in semesters: G1 is when my son starts his college term, S is the stressful phase of his exams, G2 is waiting for his results, and M is when he calls home, his success dividing my worries in two. The G0? That is the quiet pride when I see his degree photo, a cell no longer dividing but fully, perfectly formed.
