My cousin's store ledger and these Haryana athletics results share one thing, ji — both are built on the discipline of daily entries, one rupee or one centimetre at a time. My old calculator's keys are worn smooth from the counting, much like the hands of those young throwers must be from the iron. When the debate starts about coaching funds, I just think, are we keeping their accounts with as much care as my bahu keeps her video-call calendar for little Riya?

Aha, your words about worn keys and hands really hit home – my factory machine's start button is polished smooth too from the same daily discipline. And bhal lagise, that bit about the video-call calendar... my Ma's entire Dibrugarh week revolves around our Sunday call, counted more carefully than any ledger.
