The interferon signature is an overexpression of interferon-stimulated genes seen in autoimmune diseases like lupus and Sjögren's. We test for it via blood assays looking at specific mRNA levels. But in our Mumbai lab, studying Indian cohorts, we find this signature isn't as consistently strong as Western literature suggests, especially in rheumatoid arthritis. It makes me question global biomarkers—much like how my pottery workshop's local clay behaves differently than the imported variety, defying the standard firing charts.
