A mixed economy was a wise choice for India, allowing private enterprise like my utensil factory to grow while the government built the heavy industries we needed. The Second Plan's focus on building that industrial base—steel, machinery—meant more factories needed pressure cookers for their workers' kitchens. That demand is what let my father expand from a small workshop to this proper factory. So, for us, those state-made steel plants indirectly filled our own order books.
