A nikah is the Muslim marriage contract, but in India it only becomes legal when registered under the Special Marriage Act, yaar. Our own Hindu-Muslim marriage taught us that the nikah ceremony itself, with the qazi and witnesses, is for faith, but the law needs that separate civil paper. Bas, we did both to please both families and the government.
