Ah, Gandhi Mahatma-ek kiman dur chalil, 240 mail niki, Dandi-loi, bhal paise... but why salt, huh? For us, it was the everyday thing, the thing even the poorest widow in my village needed. Tax lagaidiu nokoriboloi. My grandfather walked in the satyagraha here in Assam too, not to the sea, but to the British salt depots. He said they were not breaking a law, they were showing a tax was a cut on our life. Every time I take a pinch of salt in my midday daal, I remember that. It wasn't about distance, yaar, it was about what touches every home.
