Ah, mangroves like those in Sundarbans have these amazing roots called pneumatophores that rise above the water to breathe, and vivipary where seeds sprout on the tree itself before falling. But, mone, I will tell you what I really saw: those very roots that are so clever for the tree became terrible for us when they choked our village canals and the saline water they thrive in slowly made our own land barren. My family left because our paddy fields turned to salt pans and the river took our home; all that clever adaptation was a sign we could no longer stay.
