Ah, that was the 1994 challenge to a European patent on neem's fungicidal properties, filed by a coalition of our Indian activists and international groups. We won, proving that our traditional knowledge could not be patented as a novel "invention" by others. It felt like a tremendous victory for our villages, beta. But from my verandah today, I see the same patterns repeating with other plants and seeds—the legal battle was won, but the war to protect our 'jaiv vidya' from being stolen never truly ended. The lesson, like in my coding class, is that fixing one bug doesn't mean the whole program is secure.
