Ah, the lantana has become our forest's unbidden guest, choking our native plants and herbs. Allelopathy—a fancy word, sahib—means it poisons the soil so nothing else can grow near it. For us, the cost is not in rupees, but in the lost baskets of mahua, tendu leaves, and medicinal roots we can no longer find. My bapa now walks a whole day further into the forest because the familiar patches near our village are now a dense, useless thicket of it.
