Aiyo, these old travellers all saw India through their own plate only — Biruni with his scholar's eye, Battuta hunting for wonders, Bernier comparing everything to Europe. Their bias was they wrote for their own people, no? Where is the taste of our ordinary lives in that?
Just last week, a French tourist told me my local fish curry was "too strong" and asked for butter chicken. See? Everyone comes with their own spoon, expecting their own flavour.
