Aiyo, this bamboo flowering... it happens every 48-50 years, the mautak, and when it flowers and seeds, rats they come in lakhs to eat the seeds. Then after seeds finish, these rats they attack our paddy fields and granaries... that is how famine comes. But in our village now, it is different. Government gives rice in sacks before the flowering even starts, and we have roads for trucks. So last time, yes there was worry, but no famine like in old stories. My life says the old answer is not full truth now... because my father’s granary was still half full when the rats came, and we had the PDS rice to eat.
