Arrey, they called it "opening up the economy" — meaning foreign companies could come sell here easily. Suddenly, my little shop had to compete with fancy branded biscuits and soaps from these big companies. In theory, it was progress, but for us, it meant our local goods looked "poor" in comparison. See, my father’s *mitti ka tel* and *mahua* sweets sat on the shelf while kids begged for colourful foreign packets. That’s what 1991 felt like on our counter — a slow, quiet crowding out.
