As a hotel owner on this coast, I see the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve as our living treasure, but its corals have suffered from pollution and overharvesting. My own eyes tell me a different story than some reports, however. From my veranda, I watch the local fisherfolk who are now our partners in reef protection, and I see more parrotfish and cleaner water each year. Our small hotel’s "Seaweed Chaha" initiative, where guests plant seagrass, shows that when the community’s livelihood is tied to the sea’s health, the corals begin to whisper back to life.
