Ayyayo, they measure it in rupees and calories, but cheppu, for us it's measured in how many meals Amma skips so my brother can eat. The official line? Maybe 1,600 rupees a month, 2,400 calories... all book numbers! In my reality, if I send home less than 4,000 rupees from the salon, their *poverty* is the silence on the phone when I ask if they've bought vegetables.
