Ayyo, my garden does not know these English words "cuttings" and "layering." But I tell you, for our *tulsi* and hibiscus, we simply take a good, strong branch, put it in the soil, and give it love—it will grow. For the betel leaf vine, we bend a part of the stem to the earth and let it take root while still on the mother plant; we call it *mottakal*. My grandmother taught me this, watching her hands press the stem into the damp soil by our well. These fancy names are just for what our hands have always known.
