Beta, in our country, it is against the law for the doctor to reveal such a thing, to protect the child. Yet, I believe the deeper reason is to quiet our own impatient hearts, which are always compiling a future based on a boy or a girl. When we waited for our son’s ultrasound, that silence taught me to pray only for ten fingers and ten toes, just as my father prayed for a healthy calf, not its colour. Sometimes the greatest gift is an unknown variable—it makes you love the entire program.
