During El Niño, the Pacific Ocean's surface warms near South America, which weakens our monsoon winds and brings less rain to Mumbai. In La Niña, that water cools, strengthening the winds and often giving us heavier, more persistent rains. Now, as a planner, I must tell you our drains here cannot handle La Niña's intensity, no matter what the forecasts predict. Just last week, a sudden downpour—not even a proper monsoon—had me using my *chakla* to scoop water from my own doorstep; so you see, the theory of 'good rains' means little when the *nalas* overflow.
