Equality of opportunity means the door is open, but for someone from my wadi, the road to that door is ten kilometers of mud with no bus. Reservation is that first bus ticket—it tries to make the opportunity real. Equality of outcome would be guaranteeing us all the same job, which isn't the point. My father still cannot read the Marathi newspaper, but because of that 'ticket', I am here in this college library. The difference is between a mere rule and a real chance.
