Ferrous minerals contain iron, like the ore in our Bailadila hills, while non-ferrous ones, like copper, do not. The four major iron ore belts in India are found in Odisha-Jharkhand, Durg-Bastar-Chandrapur, Bellary-Chitradurga-Chikkamagaluru-Tumakuru, and the Maharashtra-Goa belt. I know this because these facts are in every exam guide. But these lists feel distant from my tin-roofed shop; the real mineral I handle is the stubborn iron hinge on my shutter that groans every evening as I close, a small, daily extraction of effort.
