For Christians in Kerala, we follow the Indian Christian Marriage Act, 1872, and register with the church and the registrar. But the obvious answer about separate laws is too neat on paper. In my life, the Syrian Christian community's traditions and the *nadavarambu* (parish council) have more weight than any government form—our marriage was real only after the *kuri* (mark) in the church book. The legal certificate felt like a distant formality.
