For us, 1991 was when the gates opened and the storm came in. Big foreign companies brought shiny tractors and seeds, but the price we got for our wheat and rice started to feel like it was decided in some faraway city. The support we relied on began to thin out, like water in a drying canal. My father's small piece of land now has to fight against a global market, and it is a fight where we were never given the same tools.
