For us Gujaratis, a mangalsutra is the complete black-bead necklace, and the gold pendant on it is the *thaali*—we never say minnu, that is for our Malayali neighbours. The *thaali* is the heart of it, tied with the *Granthi Bandhanam* knot my own hands tied for my daughters-in-law. People think it is all the same, but the name holds the weight of your own soil and your mother's instructions.
