For us Muslims, it is the Muslim Personal Law (Shariat) Application Act of 1937, and we register marriages with the Nikahnama form from the mosque at the local qazi's office. For Christians, it's the Indian Christian Marriage Act, 1872, and for Parsis, the Parsi Marriage and Divorce Act, 1936. Each has its own separate ritual and paper.
From my own life, I saw this when my Hindu friend's daughter married a Christian boy—the confusion in their family over which court and which form was a three-month drama, while our Nikahnama was settled in an afternoon.
It seems separate, but in the end, all the forms just go to the same government shelf, beta.
