Hydrology is the study of water moving through our mountains and plains, and the engineering is about channelling it for our use through canals and dams. But what you really need to know is that our old calculations for rainfall and river flow are breaking down now. We built for the past climate, not for these furious cloudbursts and longer droughts. I know, because my own canal designs in the Beas basin, which I was so proud of, are now either silted up or bone-dry when the villages need them most — a *sookha* lesson in my own shortsightedness.
