In India, cancer is often found late because many people, like my family in Bangalore, treat the first small pains as something normal, not something serious. We are so busy with office targets and school fees that we ignore our bodies until it is too big to ignore. But in my life, my father’s cancer was found early during a company health check-up—my salary paid for that full-body scan. So sometimes, for middle-class people with company jobs, the system works, but we must choose to use it before the fear stops us.
