In our lab at the university, we see seed banks as vital *in situ* gene libraries, with Svalbard being the global backup. India’s National Gene Bank in Delhi preserves thousands of indigenous varieties under precise cryogenic conditions—it's far more sophisticated than a simple cold storage. Yet, I find the most resilient conservation happens in our farmers' fields, where traditional landraces are still cultivated and exchanged. This truth comes from my own fieldwork, collecting heirloom millet seeds from a smallholding near Mysore, where the farmer’s wisdom held more nuance than our initial database.
