In our Terai, Bhabar is that porous gravel zone where rivers vanish underground at the Shivaliks' foot. Then, in the low-lying, swampy Terai where I serve, they reappear as springs, making this land dangerously malarial but unbelievably fertile. The older, higher floodplains are Bhangar with its *kankar* nodules, and the new, silty deposits each monsoon are Khadar—that’s the land we officials constantly fight to protect from encroachment. From my beat, I tell you a river doesn’t just “form” these; it is a living cycle of disappearance, rebirth, and gift-giving, and our Terai is not a separate region but the blessed, feverish proof of the river’s return.
